A Cosmic Joke: Tucker Carlson Teaching the World About the Beis HaMikdash

History sometimes behaves like a comedian with a dark sense of humor. It arranges the stage so that the punchline lands in the most unexpected mouth.

The recent podcast conversation by Tucker Carlson about the growing confrontation between Israel, the United States, and Iran offered one of those strange moments. Carlson framed the conflict not as a conventional geopolitical struggle but as something deeper — a religious war whose final objective, he claimed, revolves around Jerusalem and the rebuilding of the Third Temple.

The remarkable part is not the theory itself. The idea that the Temple Mount sits at the center of world history is hardly revolutionary. It is, in fact, one of the most basic assumptions embedded in the Jewish tradition for thousands of years. What is remarkable is who is saying it!

For generations, Jews have prayed three times a day for the rebuilding of the Beis HaMikdash. The liturgy is explicit. The prophets are explicit. Jewish history itself revolves around that mountain in Jerusalem. And yet in modern times, particularly among secular Jews and even large segments of the religious world, the Temple Mount has become almost an abstraction — something tucked safely into ancient history or deferred to some vague messianic future.

Meanwhile, the nations of the world seem increasingly convinced that the mountain matters.

Carlson’s podcast reached millions. In it, he described the conflict with Iran as something more than strategic competition or nuclear deterrence. He suggested that the struggle centers on Jerusalem itself, and specifically on the Temple Mount. Whether one agrees with his analysis or not is almost beside the point. The fact that the conversation is happening at all — on mainstream global platforms — is extraordinary.

Because the Torah itself predicted something very much like this. “אז יאמרו בגוים…” — Then the nations will say.

The verse describes a moment when the nations of the world begin to recognize the hand of God in Jewish history before the Jewish people themselves fully grasp what is happening. Look around…

Iranian leaders constantly reference Jerusalem and the destruction of Israel as a religious obligation. Evangelical Christians speak openly about the prophetic significance of Jerusalem. Secular Western commentators now speculate about the Third Temple in geopolitical discussions.

And many Jews? Many are uncomfortable even mentioning it.

The Temple Mount, the very heart of Jewish history, has been reduced in modern discourse to a “sensitive political site.” The idea that it represents the spiritual center of the world is often treated as fringe, mystical, or unrealistic.

Yet the nations seem convinced otherwise.

In an almost surreal twist, a commentator widely criticized by many Jews as hostile or antisemitic has ended up explaining to millions of listeners that the conflict surrounding Israel is ultimately about the Temple in Jerusalem.

It is difficult to miss the cosmic irony.

Jewish tradition teaches that even opposition to Israel ultimately serves a purpose in the unfolding of history. Pharaoh believed he was fighting the Israelites; in reality he was advancing the Exodus. Haman believed he was destroying the Jewish people; in reality he set the stage for their salvation.

Enemies often become unwilling messengers.

The pattern repeats again and again throughout Jewish history. Those who oppose the Jewish mission frequently end up broadcasting it to the world.

Whether Tucker Carlson intended to highlight the centrality of the Temple Mount in Jewish destiny is almost irrelevant. The result is the same: millions of people are now hearing about it.

At the very moment when many Jews hesitate to speak about the Temple, the nations are discussing it openly.

That strange inversion should give us pause.

Perhaps this is exactly what the verse meant: אז יאמרו בגוים — the nations will say it first.

And only afterward will the Jewish people begin to realize what time it is.
